EDOF (Extended Depth of Focus)
Extended range with fewer visual side effects.
Visual range coverage
Simplified illustration. Actual visual performance varies by IOL model, eye characteristics, refractive target and individual patient.
EDOF lenses use wavefront-shaping technology to extend the range of clear vision from distance through intermediate. They aim to reduce glasses dependence while causing fewer night-vision side effects than multifocal lenses.
Possible advantages
- Extended functional range without lines or zones
- Smooth transition between distances
- Lower halos and glare than multifocal
- Good contrast
Possible limitations
- Near vision typically still requires some reading glasses
- Some patients experience a "glow" or slight softness at near
- May need glasses for fine print or prolonged reading
- Premium cost
Typical spectacle dependence
Often reduced for distance and intermediate; reading glasses may still be needed for small print
Detailed distance-by-distance vision profile for this lens type is being finalized and will be added here — for now see the comparison table below for a side-by-side view across all criteria.
A detailed "who this suits" checklist is being finalized and will be added here — in the meantime, the trade-offs above and the Choosing an IOL guide can help.
